As a practitioner of Thai Yoga Massage (TYM) I often get asked how it differs from other massages?
TYM is an ancient healing art with five roots:
-Chinese and Eastern medical practices and cultural traditions
-Indigenous Thai medicine
-Hatha yoga
-Ayurveda
-Buddhism
I believe it is the last of these roots that elevates TYM to the highest realms of the healing arts. The healing, the restoring and the relaxing is boosted by the Buddhist root - the practitioner being in a state of metta meditation throughout the treatment. The metta touch - the intention of the practitioner touching with loving kindness - is the unique component.
There are of course some very obvious practical differences like not using oil, remaining fully dressed, working the whole body, being on a mat on the floor, and not least the deep stretching techniques.
No matter how many techniques the practitioner knows and uses, without that loving kindness (metta) touch the end result will not be satisfactory and blissful.
